Black, White, and Red focuses on how Black women participated, influenced, and struggled in the early film industry. Divided into two sections, the exhibition highlights women behind and in front of the camera.
"Behind the Light” highlights Black women who worked as writers, directors, producers, and entrepreneurs within the film industry. This section features Eloyce King Patrick Gist, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Micheaux, and Madam C.J. Walker.
"Out in Front” examines African American actresses who were excluded from the mainstream film industry and often relegated to race films and stereotypical roles or forced to pass as white to find work. In this section we feature Louise Beavers, Anita Bush, Eslanda Goode Robeson, and Maria P. Williams.
