The Wright is leading the vanguard of cultural institutions dedicated to combating environmental degradation. And media outlets across the country are taking notice.
2022 notable LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY
The Wright's Chief Sustainability Officer, Leslie Tom, believes successful sustainability is a collaborative effort, and is working to define the “Green Museum of the Future.” Under Tom's leadership, The Wright partnered with the College for Creative Studies to extend the life of dead or dying trees on the museum's campus by developing a lumber woodshed studio.
Sustainability Excellence Award Recipient
The Sustainability Excellence Awards is a signature program of the Environment and Climate Network that educates, facilitates, and encourages green practices in museums. The Wright and Michigan Science Center received the 2019 award for their collaboration on people-centered programs that engaged the museums and their community in a dialogue on sustainability. The programs worked to shift from a self-described “culture of waste” towards a holistic, institution-wide culture of environmentalism.
Celebrated Art Installation
The New York-based arts publication Hyperallergic covered The Wright's Shine a Light art installation (a joint collaboration created by artist Ash Arder, architect Aaron Jones, and the Manistique Block Club), an eco-focused project aimed to illuminate some of Detroit's darkest neighborhoods with nighttime projections of the city's elders.
Innovative Stormwater Diversion Program
Model D News spoke to Leslie Tom, The Wright's Chief Sustainability Officer, about the museum's successful stormwater diversion program (a collaboration with the Michigan Science Center), as well as the many challenges that climate change poses for the city of Detroit at large.
