Join The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History as we present the regional premiere of Junebug Production’s Gomela/To Return: Movement of Our Mother Tongue on September 15th and 16th at the Detroit School of the Arts.
Gomela/to Return: Movement of Our Mother Tongue, directed by Stephanie McKee-Anderson and featuring internationally renowned poet Sunni Patterson and award-winning choreographer Kesha McKey, is a ceremony of the collective memory of the ‘the Black Experience’. A journey into the African American understanding of connection from Africa and Haiti to the American Midwest and south.
In collaboration with drummer Jawara Simon, the ensemble explores the vibrant stories of African American historic reality through a contemporary expression of spoken word, hip hop and jazz. Representing the survival of Black people from New Orleans and beyond, GOMELA is an illustration of courage, survival, resilience, and hope that exist is the face of oppression.
GOMELA is a multi-disciplinary presentation that inspires diasporic communities to continue share their stories and to reimagine the future.
