From Injustice to Advocacy: An Evening with Yusef Salaam
Event Location: General Motors Theatre
Join The Detroit Opera, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and collaborators for a moderated conversation with activist, poet, and New York City council member Yusef Salaam.
At just 14 years old, he, along with Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Salaam, and Korey Wise, were wrongly convicted of assaulting a Central Park jogger in 1989. Yusef survived nearly seven years in prison until 2002, when he was exonerated by DNA evidence.
Moderated by Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III, assistant professor at the University of Michigan, this conversation will explore his journey of resilience, justice, and his pursuit of criminal justice and prison reform. Following the conversation there will be a moderated question and answer period.
This event is made possible with support from the Gilbert Family Foundation, Hudson-Webber Foundation, and the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.
